UCRC Medals at Speakmon Regatta 2022

November 1, 2022

This past weekend, the University of Cincinnati Rowing Club (UCRC) attended the Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta in Columbus, Ohio. The weather gods blessed us with great racing weather for the day (a pleasant change compared to our first Fall regatta). We were also very happy to see friends and family attend this event to witness our racing skills on display!

We raced 6 boats in 5 different events down the 4,700 meter course along the Griggs Reservoir. Out of our 6 boats, 5 boats came home with hardware, and 3 of these boats earned gold!

Men’s Open 2- Event

Juniors Connor Klein and Nathan Damas took first place in the Men’s Open 2- event. This is the second regatta of the season where these two have taken home gold in the pair. They will go on to race this boat at our final regatta of the season — the Head of the Hooch

Our Men’s Open 2- B entry took second place in the event, bringing home silver. Junior Tommy Owendoff sat in stroke, and senior Ayush Chanda bowed the boat to its second-place spot.

Women’s Novice Open 4+ Event

Our novice women took first place in the Women’s Novice 4+ event. The boat held freshman Laura Moser in stroke seat followed by freshman Katrina Schneider, sophomore Taegan Phelps, and Molly Moser in bow seat. Senior Kathryn “Kat” Alvarez coxed the boat to victory with a 3:40.5 lead over their closest competitors.

This is the boat’s second victory of the year, and we’re excited to see how they place this coming weekend in Chattanooga, TN.

Women’s Open 2- Event

With junior Erin Day in stroke and senior Rose Saalman bow, our women’s pair took gold in their event. This was the first event of the season for this boat. The two will be racing again together in a double at the Head of the Hooch next weekend.

Mixed Open 4+ Event

In the Mixed Open 4+ event, our boat, stroked by junior Tommy Owendoff took second place. Behind Tommy, sat novice sophomore Zak McNaughton, freshman Sarah Boellner, and freshman Claire Hulett. Senior Kathryn "Kat" Alvarez sat at the helm of this medaling boat as well.

Heading to the Hooch

This coming weekend, we’re incredibly excited to head to Chattanooga, TN for the Head of the Hooch regatta, our final and most competitive regatta of the season. Over the course of this two-day regatta, UCRC oarsmen and women will race in 5 different events.
